Friday Art: »The Art of Fashion: Installing Allusions«

»The Art of Fashion: Installing Allusions« is an exhibition, which took place in Museum Boijmans van Beuninging in Rotterdam Sept. 19th 2009 - Jan. 10th, 2010 and is featuring the new work of five of the world's leading fashion designers.

As you might guess from the title, the exhibition focuses on the relationship between fashion and art by fulfilling different creative projects. The designers are experimenting with installations and performances, patterns, shapes, forms, sculptures... the effect of all this is an illusion of one imaginary world.

One of the questions rased by this exhibition is "What do we use allusion to do and where does allusion end?", which means that the visitors feel encourage to think outside the box and look at clothes in different way.

Now I would like to pay special attention to the work of two famous designers featured in the exhibition.

Micro Geography: a Cross Section

With his project »Micro Geography: a Cross Section« Hussein Chalayan tries to bring together fashion, body and nature. To achieve this he places a spinning mannequin in an aquarium surrounded by the elements of nature - water, earth and air. The focus here is on the manequin's movements as cameras film them.
With this installation Chalayan wants to show the world not only the importance of performance in fashion, but also the relationship between these three elements (fashion, body, nature).

Childhood Memories

Anna-Nicole Ziesche uses fashion to bring together her work and childhood memories, therefore
she choose different objects reminding her of that time - her child's room and the jumpers she knitted herself. Her special contribution to this exhibition is that, by using her clothes as a big source of memories and history, the whole project attains a very personal touch.

The topic of this "Friday Art" post will be something very exciting called Fashion + Art Collusion. This is a project, part of the initiativ providing the great opportunity to show the world the interdisciplinary character of fashion and to establish a longstanding relationship between fashion and art.

It was conceived by the BFC/Bazaar Fashion Arts Foundation, a charity which aims to bring together the leaders in different fields such as fashion and the visual arts, opera, dance, theatre and film and to celebrate the creativity and London's role as the center of this process.
The project proves that different artists can collaborate, inspire each other and create something unique. The results of their collaborations encompasses sculpture, video, music and photography. Some of the famous names featured in the project are the designers Stephen Jones and Hussein Chalayan and the contemporary artists Cerith Wyn Evans and Gavin Turk.

PS: I've selected only fashion related photos for this post, but you can find also many other photos of the untraditional creations from this project. To read more about them visit my sources.
There is also a video about the goals of the initiative, which is really worth watching (click here to watch it)

AW 2010/2011

Friday Art")

Savage Beauty.

Hello, guys!

As you've seen in the latest "Friday Art" post fashion nowadays has also concord the museum - the place for art performance.
One example for that is the retrospective exhibition Savage Beauty of Alexander McQueen, which use to take place in Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It showcases his work and features one hundred ensambles and seventy accessories from his nineteen-year careeer. Bolton says about McQueen on the eve of Savage Beauty's opening: "The  power of McQueen’s work lies in the frisson and contrast of complete opposites. He was a very emotional designer and the rawness of his emotions was often reflected in his clothing."
As you will see in the next photos Bolton has right.

I would like to show you some of the selected objects for the exhibition, which I find especially inspiring.

Sarabande SS 2007

This fairy tail-dress wears the name Sarabande and is one of the best Alexander McQueen's pieces. The combination of nude silk organza and silk and fresh flowers makes it look special and powerful.

Remember Sam Taylor-Wood’s dying fruit? Things rot. . . . I used flowers because they die. My mood was darkly romantic at the time.” - See more at: http://blog.metmuseum.org/alexandermcqueen/dress-sarabande/#sthash.V1Pu5VXm.dpuf
Highland Rape, AW 1995/96

This dress called Highland Rape is from the McQueen's autumn/winter collection 1995/96. The mix of earth colors and materials like cotton and lace makes it appear special and delicate, but  in the same time also quite shocking to the public. With this dress becomes lace a signature of the designer.

Plato's Atlantis SS 2010

Plato's Atlantis is a dress of gray wool and silk knit printed in jellyfish pattern. This  is the model, which many fashion critics define as "hybrid" because of the fabric, cut and all the layers.

Andrew Bolton: This particular dress came from a collection called VOSS, which was all about beauty. And I think one of McQueen’s greatest legacies was how he would challenge normative conventions of beauty and challenge your expectations of beauty—what we mean by beauty. This particular one is made out of ostrich feathers dyed red. And the glass slides are actually microscope slides that have been painted red to give the idea of blood underneath. And there’s a wonderful quote in association with this dress, where he talks about how there’s blood beneath every layer of skin. And it’s an incredible, again, very powerful, powerful piece. - See more at: http://blog.metmuseum.org/alexandermcqueen/dress-voss-3/#sthash.A0PM98MM.dpuf

 Dress No 13, SS 1999

My personal favorite is Dress No 13. For the production of this dress assumes McQueen the role of performance artist. In one of his runway shows turns white cotton dress into something really powerful by spray-painting with different colors. The most fashion critics define the creation of this dress as one of the most memorable moments of the designer's shows.

Friday Art: Prada Transformer

Friday, 11 July 2014
By OMA ©

Friday Art".

Първата модна изложба, състояла се през април 2009, носи името "Waist Down - Skirts by Miuccia Prada".

Hey, guys!

It's Friday which means it's  "Friday Art" time.
I'm curious to know which is your first association with the word "fashion"? I'm sure many of you would think of fashion stores or fashion boutiques - the most usual places for spreading fashion (besides the new medias of course).
Maybe you don't suspect, but there are many new places within the fashion industry nowadays.
As you will see in the upcoming posts, there is a strong bond between fashion and the most common art place - the museum.

I don't know if you've heard of Prada Transformer. This is a temporary multifunctional pavilion situated in South Korea. The building has roughly a tetrahedral structure, but it can also take different forms depending on the function for which the building is needed at the moment- it can host a fashion exhibition, cinema, art exhibition or special event. The innovative structure allows the walls of the building to become floors and floors to become walls. The museum has started as a host of the fashion exhibition "Waist Down - Skirts by Miuccia Prada" in April 2009.
Rem Koolhaas explains the idea behind the Prada Transformer: “Rather than having one average condition, we conceived a pavilion that, by simply rotating it, acquires a different character and accommodates different needs.”

What do you think about the innovative concept of this museum? Do you think it's good?

Hello, guys!

I'm so excited that it's finally friday, which means it's time for something new and different on my blog. Recenlty I was writing a paper for the university and the topic was: "Fashion and Art"
It was really interesting and extending to do the research, because I found so many new things about the fashion industry. I realised how often we get lost in the cheap crowd clothing and forget what fashion really is. Don't get me wrong - I love the cheap commercial trends too, I just think fashion is far more than that.
The point of thе new column in my blog called "Friday Art" will be to convince you in that and to inspire you to look at fashion from a different angle, because it's more than just clothes.

So today I decided to share with you something really inspiring from my point of view.
This is the collection »Body Meets Dress, Dress Meets Body«  of the japanese designer Rei Kawakubo.
Kawakubo, unlike the most fashion designers, doesn't seem interested in the glamor, beauty and femininity. As you can see from the photos, her clothes look alternative because of the avant-garde vibe. They are "revolutionary" and questioning all standards of beauty.
In this collection the designer broke the tradition and showed the world that clothes are more than they appear on first sight. Therefore, according to Kawakubo, it's very important to observe them two or three times until you can get their message.
On the other hand the unique dresses from this collection confirm the strong bond between clothing and human body. Тhereby, Kawakubo's clothes are capable of turning every place into a stage where everybody is involved.
Exactly this is that special effect they have - to turn people into actors and spectators.

As you can see Kawakubo is more than just a designer. On this point I have to agree with Vogue: »Kawakubo weathered the outrage, and her larger achievement—her avant-garde triumph—was that she gave people a chance to feel passionately about fashion«.

What do you think about this collection? Do you find it inspiring?
